Adie Gerber

  • Adie Gerber joined the South African National Defence Force initially for National Service in 1986 and as permanent force member in 1988. After completion of training as Army Intelligence Officer he was posted to the 2nd South West African Special Forces Unit (2 SWA Spes), functioning as Unit Intelligence Officer as well as Unit Adjutant and Company Second In Command during specific operational deployments. From 2 SWA Spes he was posted to Western Province Command Head Quarters functioning as Intelligence Collection and Processing officer.
  • Adie was posted to the Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre (JARIC) at the end of 1990 after completion of the Senior Image Interpretation Course. At JARIC he completed training as image analyst, progressing to holding the posts of Head of Photo Interpretation (PI) and Head of Project support for 3 and 2 years respectively.
  • Adie also attended a TITUS training course, presented by GDTA in Toulouse, France and a course at JARIC presented by French instructors. He was part of the team that developed the new Senior Image Interpretation Course in line with new technologies and concepts. This necessitated research into new or additional training material as well as the upgrading of JARIC’s course ware.  Part of his training responsibility was the generation of new training exercises as well as new or improved subjects such as Introduction to PI, Digital PI, Product compilation and Panoramic Scaling and Measuring. Adie was also involved in the specification, testing and implementation of the Military Image Interpretation Computer System (MIICS), as well as presenting of all system related training on the Military Image Interpretation Computer System (MIICS) used by JARIC. As Section Head of PI he was expected to present lectures and briefings to students on courses at JARIC as well as to visitors to the unit which included visitors from foreign countries.  Lectures and briefings were also presented at other Military Institutions, National Intelligence agency members, SA Police Services Conferences, and as part of courses held by the CSIR which included a number of foreign students.
  • After leaving JARIC in 1998 he joined Infoplan for two years as an operational consultant on Image Exploitation systems.
  • Adie has been assisting clients such as farmers, legal practitioners and security system providers by providing advisory or expert witness testimony based on information extracted from imagery. Other cases involved related to the use of CCTV and crime scene imagery, human recognition, etc.
